Where Confidence Reluctance and Sass Come To A Boil

Badass Burning Flames

Bourbon Old Fashioned

I’ve always been a fan of Bourbon.  Here’s a classic cocktail that’s simple to make and does not require exotic types of booze that I will never use again.  I’m frugal and only want to keep my absolute favorites stocked in our very tiny liquor cabinet.  Cheers!

The Stuff You Need:

For each cocktail:

4 dashes of Angostura bitters

1 teaspoon sugar – or – 1 tablespoon simple syrup* (optional)

1/2 slice of Orange (crosswise, like a wheel), peel and seeds removed

3 Maraschino Cherries

1 splash Club Soda (use Cherry club soda for added flavor)

2 ounces Bourbon

1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth

How To Do This:

  1.  Place bitters, sugar, orange slice, and cherries into the bottom of a rocks glass.
  2. Mash the fruit with a muddle until you achieve a fine pulp.**
  3. Add Bourbon and Vermouth and stir.
  4. Add ice and a splash of club soda and stir.
  5. Garnish with orange and cherries, if desired, and serve.

Notes:

*Simple syrup is, well, simple to make.  For basic simple syrup put one cup of water in a pot.  Add 1 cup of sugar.  Place on the stove over medium high heat.  Stir until all the sugar has dissolved.  Remove from heat and allow to cool.  Store in a jar.  This is great to have on hand for cocktails or drizzling over fruit.   You can make flavored simple syrup, such as ginger, by allowing the ginger to steep, like tea.  There are literally dozens of flavors you could create to make your cocktails extra special.

**If you don’t have a muddle, use the end of a wooden spoon.
